Visiting Nicolas Zuchuat’s exhibition is like stepping straight into a world of colour imbued with spontaneity, mystery, turmoil and powerful emotions. The technique of painting with a palette knife creates unique textural effects and highlights the artist’s delicacy. The subjects depicted take us on a journey through the Valais and Lavaux, as well as to Tuscany, Brittany and Provence, or capture our attention with a bouquet of flowers or a still life in which the fruit seems full of life.

Trained as a cabinetmaker, Nicolas always had a flair for pictorial representation. From pencil sketches to wood carvings, from watercolours to oil paintings, he constantly depicted the teeming life around him in a luminous and subtle manner. This retrospective is a tribute to this artist, who passed away 30 years ago but remains ever-present through his art. (Text by Sylvie Zuchuat)
